Wintering Over

There is something so peaceful and brilliant about Sandwich, NH in the winter when everything is blanketed with snow. Watching the trees dance and vibrate to the music of the wind, I’m reminded that although it looks quiet there is much activity outside. Under the snow, the gardens sleep. I have several seed catalogs out and a pot of hot coffee. Looking at Mom’s garden design sketched last spring still tacked on the bulletin board in her office, I wonder what she and Stephen will to add to the gardens this year. The soil here is so rich and nutrient-dense that some summers we have been challenged to keep up with what comes out of the ground! Soon the Cold Brook Gardens crew and Mom will be making the rounds at Moulton Farm and Spider Web Gardens for special seedings and turning over the soil to sow a new season of living colors, tastes and textures that will make its way into the kitchen. Now, I’m starting to get hungry. But first, I must get outside. and let my dog take me on a walk.
